LY LIMLy
2007 Small Business Champion
Entrepreneur Winner

Ly Lim is co-founder off Knowledge Plus – a successful Mawson Lakes based training, IT services and design business.

According to Ms Lim, it was an ongoing commitment to the small business community that helped her win both the Business Services and Entrepreneur categories in South Australia, before going on to win at national level.

With a desire to help others develop skills, build their career and reach their potential, Ms Lim created Knowledge Plus in 2003.

The businesswoman believes a lack of executive training is a major limitation to small business growth. She says time pressures often leave owners concentrating on day-to-day issues rather than the bigger picture. This, coupled with ongoing labour shortages in Australia, means skill development is often neglected.

“Training is one area that businesses often lose sight of and this ultimately impacts their potential,” says Ms Lim. “One of the mistakes that businesses can make is to settle into a pattern and stop trying to innovate and improve their business as the market changes.”

Conscious of keeping Knowledge Plus evolving, Ms Lim has taken her own advice and uses the company’s advisory board – made up of a range of specialists - to keep abreast of industry trends and the business environment. This has allowed her to expand her business and implement new processes.

According to Ms Lim, the secret to success is not trying to be an expert at everything. “Use your network to gather specialist advice and skills to help your business run successfully and expand when the time is right.”

Ms Lim found that entering the Australian Small Business Champion Awards proved to be a great opportunity for her to evaluate her business and its operations, as well as spot possible opportunities for improvement.

She sees the 2007 Champion Entrepreneur Award as a recognition for her staff, clients, business partners and community.
